What is the best hotel for a romantic weekend in Amsterdam?

July 31, 2009 - 12:45 am 6 Comments

I want to take my boyfriend away for his birthday in January and am undecided which hotel to book. Can anyone recommend a good hotel, that’s central and nice for a celebrating couple?

There are so many great options that it’s hard to choose! I’m also not sure what your budget is — at the high end, you might want to check out the Fusion Suites Number 40, the Black Tulip, Hotel Roemer, Banks Mansion, and the Seven Bridges hotel (these are all pretty pricey — in the $200-$400 range!)

For something a little more wallet-friendly but still very nice (under $200), you might want to look into the Chic & Basic, the Bridge Hotel, or the Hotel Zandbergen.

For a real bargain (under $100 a night), the Hotel Brouwer is cute — or look into the Prinsenhof, Hotel Weber, or the Owl Hotel.

If you want a little more food for thought, check out IgoUgo.com’s Amsterdam page; there are tons of reviews on hotels, restaurants, activities, nightlife, and other things to do in Amsterdam, as well as travel journals and candid pictures that might get your inspiration going. http://www.igougo.com/travel_guide-l502-Amsterdam_tourism.html

Hope this helps — and have a great time! What a nice girlfriend you are, whisking your boyfriend away for his birthday!

What is the purpose of the Irish Republican Army?

July 31, 2009 - 12:45 am 4 Comments

My mother is Irish and I am trying to learn more about my roots, but I have never known much about Irish politics.

Can someone explain what exactly the Irish Republican Army is and what their purpose is?

So far what I know is that they were a group of Irish people that fought the British for independance of Ireland back in the early 1900’s, but why are they still together? What do they want to acheive exactly?

Thank you.

Hi
I’m in a simular situation to you,My father is Irish..The English first invaded ireland in the 1100’s although they didn’t have that much impact over the island until the 1600’s,Ireland is a catholic country so was britian until the reformation they became protestant.they wanted ireland to be the same and to kill off the Irish language so they promised citizens in britian that if they moved to ireland they would receive hundreds of acres of land for free.By doing this the british kicked the irish off their own land left them homeless and give it to their own protestants people killing many irish in the process. They settled mainly in the irish area of ulster which is geographically in the north of ireland.By the 1800’s britian offically joined ireland with the rest of the uk against irelands will with the act of union of 1801…The Irish were terribly treated by the british during the famine in ireland 1840’s,the british sent our food to britian leaving us to starve even tho we had enough to feed ourselves..Well over a million irish people died and the same ammount emigrated mainly to America. The Irish were not allowed to own a property in ireland a protestant landlord owned everything in the country with a overwhelming majority of the populatpopulation catholic.ion irish catholic. The IRA was set up to fight for Irish Independence they achieved this after the 1916 easter rising. There are 32 counties in Ireland,26 of these counties are in Irish control while the remaining 6 make up Northern Ireland which is still part of the Uk.In Ulster there are 9 counties 6 of those are northern ireland the remaining 3Irish as ive just stated.

Following the formation of the Republic of Ireland civil war broke out,The Irish were disgusted that 6counties still remained in british control.they fell out amongst themselves over the issue of whether or not to fight on for the other 6 or not. Some felt that if they did britian would recapture the whole of the island again and felt that these 6 would quickly be returned to ireland in the near future while the others wouldn’t accept it at all and wanted to continue the struggle against britian. In Northern ireland today its 50 50 split between the brits and the irish hence the Ira continued operating in the north for a united ireland.Half the population in the Northern ireland want to remain part of the uk as they are the descendents of the british protestants from the 1600’s while the other half are the Irish which wants reunification with the rest of ireland. In the republic all the population is irish. So in conclusion politics deals with the divisions in the north today on both sides although a very small majority still want to use force to achieve their goals although they barely would number 100.the ira has given up its weapons diplomatic talks are in place to solve the issues now..

Complicated stuff hard to write down 800years fighting if u seek anymore info e-mail me

I was pulled in early december but was not breathalised as I admitted being over the limit, also the gaurd has since said that I had mounted the path. When in the gaurd station I refused the blood/urine test whilst still admitting being over the limit.I refused the test due to having issues with the doctor thst was to carry out said tests.I havnt received a summons as yet

They have no evidence that you were over the booze limit, thus when you go to court, [if you do] your lawyer will be able to argue that you are as pure as the driven snow.

I’m no expert on law, but the laws of England must surely be similar to those of Ireland in that a person is innocent until proven guilty and since the Guarda do not have proof that you were over the limit, then they cannot prosecute.

This may be the reason for the delay in you receiving a summons.

My guess it that you will not be summoned to court.

Just look upon this as a warning and stay off the booze if your gonna drink.

How to write a inviting letter to prove accommodation when doing visa?

July 31, 2009 - 12:45 am 1 Comment

I m a non-eu student and im doing a shengen visa to visit my friend who also a non-eu student studying in France. I need he to write me an inviting letter to prove my accommodation.
So my problem is can he just write the letter personally, because he tried to get the letter from his uni, they wont be able to do it unless i m going to study there.
So any suggestion?
Thx all.

He needs to go to the local town-hall (mairie) of the town he is living and get a "Attestation d’accueil" (Proof of Accomodation) which he sends to you by mail so that you are able to attach it to your visa application. .. http://www.nyidanmark.dk/NR/rdonlyres/8F3A05CA-3215-42CF-96F7-0D12E0A29674/0/16260_samlet.pdf (see page 146) .. If he should however live in a student’s hostel I am afraid that the French authorities will not issue that accomodation proof.

What are the AFFORDABLE hotels and in GOOD areas of Memphis?

July 31, 2009 - 12:45 am 3 Comments

A friend and I are planning to visit Memphis first of November. The list of hotels is overwhelming and we have gotten mixed reviews. We know there are bad & good areas and need to know where TO stay and affordably. ($50-$100 a night).
We plan to visit Graceland and Beale St.
Thank you for your help!

Southaven is a good choice. It is not too far from Graceland and is within an easy drive to downtown. My recommendation would be to stay at the Drury Inn in Horn Lake. It’s actually right across the interstate from Southaven and is reasonably priced ($50-$75)(the last I remember, I haven’t been back in 2 years). It is at the Goodman Road/I-55 interchange. The area is relatively safe and across the interstate is a new mall with plenty of restaurants, etc. Plus, if you head west on Goodman Road from the Drury Inn and drive about 3-4 miles, then take a right onto Hwy 51 it’ll take you right up to Graceland (about 6-7 miles further) I would not recommend staying in Southaven around the Stateline Road, area.

Whatever you do, if you want a pleasant experience of Memphis do NOT stay too close to Graceland. The area simply is not a safe one. You could stay downtown but then prices are higher and truthfully, the only safe part of downtown is really Beale St or directly in front of the Peabody hotel. The other areas are somehwhat shady.

Another place to stay is off I-40 on the east side of the city. There is a Holiday Inn express directly off there interstate and you could do a search of places near the Wolfchase mall area. It’s a good area and the room costs are within your range, but the distance from downtown and Graceland would be a bit further.
