When is tv in the republic of ireland switching to digital for good..?

October 31, 2009 - 8:12 am 2 Comments

like in the uk (i live in n ireland) its planned to be completed by 2012.

Is there an equivalent to freeview. i see that tvs from the uk with built in freeview dont work in the republic as i didn’t know before i tried. is there a different sygnal type or something? Im just wondering.

ALL european Digital TV is basically the same standard DVB-T.
But this has several options, and some are recent.

In principle, all TV’s should work anywhere.
However, because the UK started earlier, many early sets and set-top boxes, may not have the latest versions of the decoding standard ‘MPEG4′

The Ireland will use this Codec (MPEG4) from day 1.
Indeed the UK will start some additional transmissions in Oct 2009, and also some for HD TV.

The mans that some current sets may need an over the air update,
Older setup boxes (the early ones from 5 years ago) may never get an update.

So in principle TV sets bought today in UK and Ireland should be both capable of working in both countries, Irish ones into the UK no problem, but expect older UK ones to need updates- which may not come available over the air in Ireland, if the sets were not supplied there. A technician may be able to visit to update them.

therefore, at least in the short term, buy an Irish market TV for the Irish system.

What hotel in Vegas has the cheapest and best rates?

October 29, 2009 - 2:48 am 7 Comments

I do not want to spend a lot of money on a hotel when I stay in Vegas, but want it to be on the strip. I saw that the Circus Circus offers rooms for a little more than $20 a night during weekdays. Are there any other hotels you could recommend to me for a price range of up to $35 per night during weekdays?

I would want the room to be clean. Kind of had a bad experience with a room like that before.

The cheapest on the strip are kind of away from the mainstream. Circus Circus, Riviera, Sahara and Stratosphere. All the hotels have pretty good rates now for weekdays. Go to this site and see what they have.

What is the Irish or Gaelic word for sunset?
And How is it pronounced?

The Irish Gaelic way to say sunset:

luí na gréine (literally the setting or lying down of the sun)

pronunciation: lee nuh GREY-nih (more or less)

The stress is on the first syllable of gréine as shown by capital letters

True history or Myth that there were Women Judges of Brehon Law before the arrival of Christians in Eire?

October 29, 2009 - 2:47 am 3 Comments

Like all of the Judges they were also Poets. Do you think that the patriarchate of Christianity deliberately worked against women showing intelligence and abilities equal to, or greater to males?
please read "to males" as, than males.

I think that most of the early Christians coming into Ireland and the other Celtic lands were shocked at the strength, intelligence, and power that women had there. They were unused to women being treated with these kinds of respect and power, so YES! Whenever they could not stamp out, kill, or severely disempower women there, they often co-opted that and changed it to suit their needs. Look at the story of The Goddess Brigid. (And there are tons of different spellings for her name) Her followers were so many, and so devout that Christianity could not fully stamp it out, so they made her a Saint. I’ve been to her cathedral in Kildare, Ireland. It’s full of Christian artifacts, artwork, and energy, but far below all that, the fire still burns for the Lady.

Gotta love the Irish. :)

What is the employment situation for art teachers in ireland?

October 29, 2009 - 2:47 am 2 Comments

I am an art teacher from the US considering a move to Ireland. Are arts specialists common in public schools? I have a BFA in VA and a MAT in AE. I took my husband to DUblin and we noticed a lot of construction (his field) so our next question is how difficult would it be for me to find a job as an art teacher (Kindergarten-12th grade certified in the states)? We are open to all locations.

As far as i know you could both have problems. The construction industry has peaked and builders and other construction workers are signing on the unemployment register in rising numbers and likely to get worse with housing market glutted with unsold houses. My son who left the local community college six years ago never had art as part of his curriculum during his entire school life. There are a few jobs for art teachers but these are few and far between and rarely in the sector you are interested. Hope i havnt put you off too much.Alan in Co. Roscommon

What are some acadian owned hotels/motels and activities on prince edward island?

October 29, 2009 - 2:47 am 1 Comment

I am doing a french project on the Acadians. We need a hotel/motel or somewhere to stay, even a inn or something to stay at, one in each county of Prince Edward Island, and three activities in each county. I look, and look, but cannot find anything. Can anyone help? I need addresses, names, sources, everything! The hotels have to be acadian owned, too. I think this whole project is stupid. Remember ; only places on Prince Edward Island. Thanks!

Challenging, but hardly stupid.

What is the magnitude of the centripetal acceleration of the car?

October 27, 2009 - 3:05 am 2 Comments

A car travels at a constant speed around a circular track whose radius is 3.74 km. The car goes once around the track in 353 s.

a = v^2/r

vel = distance traveled/time

distance = 2 pi r = 2 pi x 3740 m = 23,487.2m

vel = 23487.2/353s=66.5m/s

a=66.5^2/3740m = 1.18m/s/s
