What is the feeling of people in Ireland (Eire) about the inflation and the euro ?

January 30, 2010 - 5:10 pm 3 Comments

This question is specific to irish people (or long time residents) because Eire is the only country in "Euroland" where the exchange parity between the old currency unit (punt) and the new euro is inferior to 1 (exactly 0,787564). It means that at the beginning of 2002, the nominal wages in punts had to be increased to be converted in euros. At the same time in France, our own wages and incomes were divided to a 6,55957 : 1 ratio (in Spain or in Italy, it was worse, of course…).

Of course, the value is the same but on the continent, people share the feeling to be poorer, and in despite of official figures, believe that prices had a sharp rise (for some specific products, it is not totally wrong…). Taking in account the specificity of the irish ratio exchange, I’m looking for concrete testimonies about how "normal" people experienced the use of our common currency unit. Thank you for all your answers, I’m really interested with that !
Thanks a lot RM, that’s really what I’m looking for ! For us, Spain (and Italy too) became much more expensive from tourist point of vue. I couldn’t imagine that in Ireland, people could have such a feeling too.

The figures looked better, but the cost of living has shot up in Ireland over the past ten years, long before the introduction of the euro, and shot up again shortly after the euro came in, so the outcome is that the €50 seems to be the same as the old £20, and it’s not worth tuppence!
I can’t BELIEVE how much cheaper Spain is compared to Ireland - a €50 in the supermarket will get you a decent amount of stuff in Spain, in Ireland, you can hardly support yourself for €50 a day for food.
So we feel much poorer too, despite the higher figures!

How might a homeless boy in Eire between the ages of 13-16 go about acheiving citezenship and into a school?

If he has no papers, no records, nothing.
What should he do?

The first thing he needs to do is either present himself at a police station or contact Social Services so that they can house him, appoint a guardian & try to sort his situation out.

You could also try contacting the Irish Refugee Council:
http://www.irishrefugeecouncil.ie/contact.html

He’s not going to be given citizenship because he has no papers, he will need to go through the same process of naturalisation as everyone else - if he’s not from the EU, they will need to establish what country he’s from but you would really need to speak to a solicitor specialising in immigration to get advice on what to do, especially if he’s a refugee & needs to put in an application for asylum.

Did the Eire-Irish add the Nazis during the Blitz?

The Irish Free State (as it was then known) was officially neutral in WW2 but gave discrete support to the Allies. These included things like allowing Allied ships to use Irish waters, interning German airmen and seamen but returning (or allowing to ‘escape’) Allied men. The Irish government did draw the line at letting the Allies use Irish ports though. Further, tens of thousands of Irishmen joined the British forces.

When Belfast was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe fire engines from south of the border were sent to help out.

I don’t know what Frank H is talking about. The IRA was an enemy of the Irish Free State which, as the name implies, already had it’s freedom from British rule.

True history or Myth that there were Women Judges of Brehon Law before the arrival of Christians in Eire?

October 29, 2009 - 2:47 am 3 Comments

Like all of the Judges they were also Poets. Do you think that the patriarchate of Christianity deliberately worked against women showing intelligence and abilities equal to, or greater to males?
please read "to males" as, than males.

I think that most of the early Christians coming into Ireland and the other Celtic lands were shocked at the strength, intelligence, and power that women had there. They were unused to women being treated with these kinds of respect and power, so YES! Whenever they could not stamp out, kill, or severely disempower women there, they often co-opted that and changed it to suit their needs. Look at the story of The Goddess Brigid. (And there are tons of different spellings for her name) Her followers were so many, and so devout that Christianity could not fully stamp it out, so they made her a Saint. I’ve been to her cathedral in Kildare, Ireland. It’s full of Christian artifacts, artwork, and energy, but far below all that, the fire still burns for the Lady.

Gotta love the Irish. :)
