Daithi o hOgain has another idea of where the name Eriu comes from in an insular Irish way, the earliest tribes were called Erainn - the people of the land and Eriu from that would mean - the land. Eire being a modern Irish form of the Old Irish would mean the same. He doesnt explain the other names for Ireland like Banbha or Fotla or Mag Ealga though
