Ernesto Che Guevara is, in fact, part Irish and part Basque!
Cuban revolutionary, Ernesto Che Guevara is, in fact, part Irish and part Basque! While Che was a native Argentine, historical archives indicate that his great-grandmother, Anna Isabel Lynch was born in County Galway, Ireland. Legend has it that Lynch later migrated to South America where she met husband and Basque descendant, Guevara. Together they produced a child named Ernesto, who would one day become Che’s father. Hence, in 1928, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara was born.

Roughly four decades later, Ernesto found himself accounting for his son’s rebellious behaviour. His response to Che’s decision to join the Cuban guerrilla movement was thus: The first thing to note is that in my son’s veins flows the blood of the Irish rebels.

On March 13,1965 Che returned home to his Irish roots during a lay-over between Prague and Cuba. After spending the day in Shannon and Limerick, Che and his fellow Cuban comrades were spotted returning to the airport wearing sprigs of shamrock.
