How can i trace a family member in Northern Ireland. I only have the birth certificate and not a lot of money.?

I am trying to trace my aunt who i never know about until now. I think she is in Antrim, Ireland. All i have is her birth certificate. Dont know where to start looking as i cant find online records for ireland anywhere.

You probably won’t have much luck with the regular genealogical route b/c by the sounds of things, your aunt is probably still living? Most genealogy records and information, family trees etc – will only give you details for people who are no longer living.

It is still worth a try to go on rootsweb or ancestry.com and take a look around – their are lots of search engines that are free, but most of the open indexes include info from the last century.

Looking for a living person – you can try various social networking sites, but if they are older (60+) they may or may not be on facebook! Chances are that your aunt may also have married -so you may be looking for someone with a different last name.

Googling and rummaging through information from Antrim might bring up something…you might also try emailing the local newspaper, and see if you can inquire that way? I’m thinking you might have to rely on the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory to help you out. Keep asking around from the area where you think she might live and you might hit on something. If she was a college grad she may have graduated with her maiden name. You must know her age if you have her birth certificate – so you might be able to pinpoint her old high school and grad date – track down people in her graduating class that might know her?

I don’t know if that helps or not – but keep looking b/c the way the web works – new info pops up all the time.

Good luck in your search!

  3. You can join http://www.ancestry.com and you can trace her through their web site. Since you are only looking for one family member, you may want to only join for one month. You can pay to use the site for one month or a few months. If you really like the site, you can join for one year. It is a good and reputable site. Good Luck!

  4. Samantha,

Thanks to the English most genealogical records pertaining to Ireland and Scotland were lost in the 1700s. The English felt the Irish and the Scots were unworthy of the kingdom of heaven and as such the English did their best to destroy the genealogicala nd baptismal records of the Irish and the Scots.

The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the very best records and free genealogy consultants in the world. Find an LDS ( Mormon ) church and ask them where the nearest genealogy facility is located. They have them in most major cities throughout the world.

  6. Ancestry.com is probably your best bet if you are trying not to spend. You can sign up for free and use their messageboards to see if you can find anyone who is looking at the same family as you. It’s a long shot but sometimes works!
emeraldancestors.com is a reasonable site but requires you to pay.
    Good luck!
