What is the purpose of the Irish Republican Army?

My mother is Irish and I am trying to learn more about my roots, but I have never known much about Irish politics.

Can someone explain what exactly the Irish Republican Army is and what their purpose is?

So far what I know is that they were a group of Irish people that fought the British for independance of Ireland back in the early 1900′s, but why are they still together? What do they want to acheive exactly?

Thank you.

Hi
I’m in a simular situation to you,My father is Irish..The English first invaded ireland in the 1100′s although they didn’t have that much impact over the island until the 1600′s,Ireland is a catholic country so was britian until the reformation they became protestant.they wanted ireland to be the same and to kill off the Irish language so they promised citizens in britian that if they moved to ireland they would receive hundreds of acres of land for free.By doing this the british kicked the irish off their own land left them homeless and give it to their own protestants people killing many irish in the process. They settled mainly in the irish area of ulster which is geographically in the north of ireland.By the 1800′s britian offically joined ireland with the rest of the uk against irelands will with the act of union of 1801…The Irish were terribly treated by the british during the famine in ireland 1840′s,the british sent our food to britian leaving us to starve even tho we had enough to feed ourselves..Well over a million irish people died and the same ammount emigrated mainly to America. The Irish were not allowed to own a property in ireland a protestant landlord owned everything in the country with a overwhelming majority of the populatpopulation catholic.ion irish catholic. The IRA was set up to fight for Irish Independence they achieved this after the 1916 easter rising. There are 32 counties in Ireland,26 of these counties are in Irish control while the remaining 6 make up Northern Ireland which is still part of the Uk.In Ulster there are 9 counties 6 of those are northern ireland the remaining 3Irish as ive just stated.

Following the formation of the Republic of Ireland civil war broke out,The Irish were disgusted that 6counties still remained in british control.they fell out amongst themselves over the issue of whether or not to fight on for the other 6 or not. Some felt that if they did britian would recapture the whole of the island again and felt that these 6 would quickly be returned to ireland in the near future while the others wouldn’t accept it at all and wanted to continue the struggle against britian. In Northern ireland today its 50 50 split between the brits and the irish hence the Ira continued operating in the north for a united ireland.Half the population in the Northern ireland want to remain part of the uk as they are the descendents of the british protestants from the 1600′s while the other half are the Irish which wants reunification with the rest of ireland. In the republic all the population is irish. So in conclusion politics deals with the divisions in the north today on both sides although a very small majority still want to use force to achieve their goals although they barely would number 100.the ira has given up its weapons diplomatic talks are in place to solve the issues now..
