do the republic of ireland see northern ireland as a part of Ireland?
or the UK…?
It’s part of the Island of Ireland.
Nationalist: "Are you Irish?"
Unionist: "No, I am British."
Nationalist: "…Are you here on holiday then?"

I see it as part of the island of Ireland, the legal position is a different issue

Well . it is undeniably part of Ireland , Geography tells us that. On a political level , I flatly ignore it as being part of the UK , when I go up north I’m still in Ireland.
My favourite line from a loyalist is "I’m not Irish, I’m northern Irish" ……lol
They were born in Ireland , they’re Irish.
Ireland = Where Irish people are born.
Britain = Where British people are born

it is legally part of the united kingdom (pounds are used) but some people do not wish it to be the case.

I’m from northern Ireland and I say that yes it is part of Ireland, but it jus different laws and we use pounds like Britain. Most of the unionists say that they are not irish because they live in n.Ireland and most of the Nationalists from the north say that they are from Ireland! Were on the same island aren’t we..? So I jus say i’m Irish to people I meet!

Part of Ireland, obviously

It’s still very much part of the UK, and not just because of the political situation.
However, for me, the most ‘English’ part of Ireland is and always will be Dublin city – which is ironic, given that it’s the capital of the Republic of Ireland. We don’t call Dubliners ‘Jackeens’ for nothing.

The UK – I would have thought that was obvious enough. I certainly wouldn’t think of it as being part of Ireland and contributors like Timothy throw further petrol on the flames by calling themselves Irish yet admit they don’t ever want to be part of our country but instead wish to remain of the UK.
That is the attitude of more people in Northern Ireland these days than people think.
But the biggest reason I actually answered this question was to query Orla C’s incredulous comment about Dublin being a very English city…..Orla, you make some very good points on this site but I’m struggling to get my head around what you mean by this one.
Dublin is a very Irish city and yes, it has a few (very picturesque) colonial buildings but that doesn’t mean anything.
If you think of the most positive stereotypes of Irish people about being friendly and welcoming and having a good sense of humour, you’re far more likely to see that in Dublin and with Dublin people.
If you look at the most negative stereotypes of Irish people that are starting to creep in these days, i.e. being unwelcoming, racist rednecks, you are far more likely to see examples of that in more "traditional" cities like Galway and Limerick.
I remember two years ago, after being on a night out in Limerick, myself and a mate were in Burger King. While I was waiting to get served, I was talking to a girl called Aoife. One of the first things Aoife said to me was "I hate all the immigrants!" in reference to the people working behind the counter. Interesting thing to say to someone that you’ve just met.
And as regards Galway, some of the things I’d hear people I went to school with or am good friends with, say about people from Africa and Asia would shock you to the core. Even coming from young people who’ve done a lot of travelling.
Hell, I could even tell you of a few comments made about people from other parts of Ireland!!!
If that is ‘real Ireland’, I’ll take Dublin any day!

Northern Ireland lies on the island of Ireland, but is part of a soverign state, the United Kingdom. So to answer your question, it is part of the UK AND Ireland.
Another question is, do people see it as Irish or British, I guess.

Technically Northern Ireland IS a part of Ireland.
Politically the government of the Republic of Ireland recognized Northern Ireland as part of the UK a while ago. I can’t say the same for the people as everyone is entitled to their own opinions so some people might not see Northern Ireland as a part of Ireland but some people might not see Northern Ireland as a part of the UK.

Despite the tact that it is part of the Uk the terrorist element still view it as part of Ireland or Irish. These foolish people continue to support the evil IRA. Only the end of the Universe can change it to becoming Irish. Even then it might not. However decent people in Republic still continue to wish for a referendum so they can become British again.
