Does my 2 year old need a passport for Republic of Ireland?

My 2 and a half year old son is a UK citizen, as are my husband and I, but he doesn’t yet have his own passport.

We’ve just been invited to my sister’s in-laws in the Republic of Ireland for a weekend in May, and were wondering whether we’d be able to go in light of our son being passport-less.

I know that adult British Citizens can travel between the UK and Ireland on just a form of photo ID. Could my son travel of his birth certificate, for example, or does he have to have a passport?

Unless you plan to fly on ryanair (they require all passengers to hold a machine-readable travel document = passport) you can just travel on any form of photo ID and no ID is required for minors (below 16) travelling with their parents.

  1. If you are going by plane, then yes . however if you are getting the ferry In 10 years of travelling to the ROI twice a year I have never been asked to show a passport, but i still would get one for him, just in case it’s about £36 and it’s valid for 5 years so it’s not too unreasonable
