How would you describe relations between the Republic of Ireland and Britain today?
These two countries have a torn past. They have been at war for centuries with Britain trying to over-run and conquer and Ireland being resilient in their defiance of British rule. But the past is the past and now its the 21st century. What is the nature of the relationship between these 2 country today? Are they close partners with a good friendship and economies ties or is there still a lot of ambivalence, dislike ans mistrust?
I think that with every passing generation the relations between the two nations are becoming easier. To get a real zeitgeist of the relationship, you should look towards sporting events which for the Irish are very important when playing against the English. For example, the Ireland-England in the Six Nations is very important and probably the most eagerly awaited game for Irish fans. In 2007, the English Anthem was played in Croke’s Park, a bastion of Irish culture, for the very first time. The reaction of the Irish fans was both respectful and defiant. I think Ireland has come a very long way in their feelings towards English people. To not jeer ”God save the Queen” says a lot about how far both countries have overcome centuries of war, mistrust and hatred. However, no matter how good relations are, there will always be that sense of injustice against the English. While the vast majority of English people are friendly towards Irish people, there are a few that would love for us to be under their rule again. I don’t care what anyone else here says: some English people look down on Irish people. On the other hand, there are some Irish people who hate the English on principle without any reason or logic to it at all. All they see is 800 years and nothing else. They can’t see that times have moved on. For the vast majority, both English and Irish people are respectful, friendly and polite to each other with very close economic ties, with playful banter being common when they encounter each other.
Your reading of the history of the relationship between the two islands is not only simplistic but very prejudiced.
As partners in the European Union, relations between the Republic of Eire and the UK are amicable.

Everyone uses the British and Irish dimension to try to explain the problems. However; MANY countries have used their power to take possession or rule over other countries, but to hear the British/Irish comment all the time seems to indicate that they are the only nation who forced rule upon others.
As for the answer to your question; With so much IRA propaganda spewed over decades, the whole world has the opinion that the British are bad and the poor wee Irish are being trodden on. NOTHING could be further from the truth. With the Irish Republic government made up of party’s that arose from partition and the members of the IRA of the 1920′s, they have believed the tripe that was orated by their forefathers fireside stories which gathered much, if not all it’s romanticism, through years and decades of elaboration. Therefore, the Irish will never trust the British due to almost a century of warped lies, murderous justification and deceit, spewed by terrorists to ease their guilt and proportion fault with others.
Personally, Any terrorist or militant organisation will ALWAYS blame someone else for their EVIL actions. The British must be sick and tired of trying to repudiate the punch-bag and big bully tag that has been the IRA’s sole goal in life.
Anyway; the Irish Republic has enough problems without worrying about trusting the British, as the country’s financial situation is almost as bad as Greece.
