If I relocate to the Republic of Ireland but work in northern Ireland who do I pay tax to?
I am considering moving to the Republic of Ireland (I am from the UK but currently work overseas) and will want dual nationality. If I live in the Republic but work in Northern Ireland what is the income tax situation in my case? Can anyone help or direct me to a web site? Many thanks!
You will pay tax in the country you are resident in. If you live in the Republic of Ireland, you will pay tax there. However, as you will be employed in the UK, you may also be liable for some taxes in the UK. Be prepared for having to pay emergency tax until your situation is sorted out. You will not have to pay double tax though, the Irish & UK revenue commissioners do talk to each other, although you may need to make a tax declaration each tax year. You pay tax to both the Republic and the UK, but the Republic will give you a credit for whatever income tax you pay to the UK..
