Should the republic of Ireland and possibly the UK raise the legal age to purchase and consume alcohol?
I was thinking it should be raised to 21, as there are too many issues with alcohol abuse with young people.
Drunk driving
Physical violence conflicted by alcohol
Kids needing their stomachs being pumped
Deaths due to alcholic poisoning
incompetence in the work force, due to being hung over.
Hang overs been considered as an acceptable reason to miss days from work.
Should 21 or possibly older be the legal age to purchase alcohol in Ireland?
yes 21 is a more realistic age. do it now not next year, now. make the fines £1000 for obtaining or serving
seen as i am 22 i would not object.. but its would not matter ireland has a drinking culture so the kids would get it easily off older people

I don’t think so. If you raise the legal age, then you risk the youths getting alcohol from other, less legitimate, places.
They will probably still find alcohol somewhere and they will still drink, but now it would be illegal and so bring other risks.

They would still get someone over 21 to get it for them and then that would lead to gangs (well more gangs) hanging around the streets drinking, Rather than in a pub or club.
I think the people who buy alcohol for the under 18s should be punished more.

No, just make it harder for them to get alcohol. I think that they should set up ‘alcohol clubs’, a bit like the old video/DVD clubs (think Blockbusters or similar) where you had to register and provide ID before getting alcohol. This would make it much harder to get cheap alcohol. I don’t think it should be raised to 21, you can be married at that age – not being able to have a drink at your wedding? You can be in the armed forces and die for your country at 18, but can’t have a drink? Bit barmy.
It should be made a criminal offence to buy teenagers under 18 alcohol and this should be enforced with large fines and probation – if it is too much to risk if they got caught bying alcohol for underage kids, they might think twice before doing it.

Kids get there hands on it now anyway. I don’t think raising the required age will do anything

I am 21 myself so it wouldn’t affect me, however it would make very little difference, no matter how much they raise the age or price of drink you will always get underage teens drinking, if they can’t buy it themselves they’ll have someone else buy it for them or they’ll use fake id’s.
Not to mention that there are just as many irresponsible adults.

Although the intention is good (to raise the age) the sad thing is that raising the age on buying alcohol doesn’t really solve the problems caused by alcohol use and abuse.
If young people can’t buy alcohol legally they’ll either: 1) get the booze from older friends, 2) pay someone off to buy it for them or 3) they can steal it from their parents liquor stash.
Awareness about alcohol problems does help to a degree but the fact remains (unfortunately): Young people will always drink.
And since people will always drink they should learn how to drink responsibly; that’s the best that we can do (for the time being….until a better solution arrives).

In the U.S. the legal age to buy alcohol is 21 but it hasn’t really done much to curb underage drinking.
Absolutely not.
Sorry but at 18 you are legally an adult. The thought that an adult would not be allowed to buy alcohol seems rediculous to me.
Raising it to 21 would not get rid of any of these problems but merely push them onto another age group. Those issues are the result of people not knowing their limits and if you raise the legal age to 21 then all you will get is 21 year olds in the exact same situation.
1: Drunk driving is actually more commonly associated with middle age groups.
2: Physical violence in my experience is actually as common in people in their twenties as it is in teenagers.
3: That will happen regardless as the 21 years old won’t have any idea how much is too much (every person is different)
4: Again this will happen regardless.
5: In cases of incompetence sack them. They’ll learn the lesson much quicker that way.
6: I have never heard anyone being excused from work for a hangover. They always say they are sick for a different reason and will still pull sick days.
